2004 Corn Maze

This May had the most rain since the1800's in mid Michigan.  Consequently the maze has more yellow corn than any other year.  We have good heigth this year and maze will still be challenging.  However our photos are not as good a quality this year with record setting rainfall.  This year you will walk through a river otter (top of picture and close up).  We are cooperating with Potter Park Zoo in Lansing this year and donating to their new river otter exhibit.  Otters are always an interesting animal to watch; very active on water or land. Visit the zoo and pick up a flyer about Bestmaze from the zoo. One dollar of your maze admission goes back to help fund the otter exhibit when you bring us the flyer by Oct. 10.

You will also see several fish, rocks and weeds in the maze.  The longer fish in the center is a northern pike -also known as "the water wolf".  Pike are a favorite game fish on many northern lakes.  Pike are known for their agressive behavior and mouthful of  sharp teeth.  Two walleye are in the bottom right corner.   Walleye are another popular game fish of the north.  Walleye are known for their schooling tendencies and the "walleye eye". The eye is such a good gatherer of light they tend to seek shelter from bright sunlight and go on the prowl for a meal when the sun is lower in the sky or wind stirs the water surface.

Hanging out in the relative safety of the weeds away from these larger fish are a couple smaller perch.  One quick burst of speed from the pikes tail and they become dinner.  When the sun goes down the perch can not see well and tend to hug the bottom.  Then the walleye whose eyes are specially suited for night feeding comes looking for meal and easily takes advantage of the low light conditions in the ongoing predator prey relationship.

The entrance and exit trails and a few connector trails are not in yet.  The pike is close to 400 feet long.

Special acknowledgements to Kinko's on Grand River in Okemos and Kesagami Lodge in Ontario Canada with this years maze.  Kinko's now is affiliated with Federal Express and can handle all your copy and print work and ship it for you with one easy stop.  If you have ever wanted to catch a trophy pike - Kesagami Lodge is the place!  They bucked the trend many years ago and went totally barbless and adopted a catch and release policy on all pike.   Now they release 1000 trophy pike every year.  I have personally seen several 40" pike landed there and my personal best a 42" pike.  And they are all still there for you to catch!   See the link to Kesagami Lodge (see 1000 trophys) if you want to visit this world class fishing destination.   www.kesagami.com
